Mind, Energy and Re-birth.

In one of my earlier posts, I wondered about the possibility of the contents of a person's mind being backed up on a storage device similar to a CD, DVD or some other device.

Before we can decide upon a storage medium, we should have an idea about how the memory/knowledge are stored in the mind.

I believe, our whole thought process is a kind of electro-chemical reaction. A stimulus (physical or otherwise) from the sensory organs sends an electrical impulse to the brain where a particular cell or group of cells located in a specific part of the brain undergoes a chemical reaction. The cells affected may be area specific depending on the nature of the impulse since different areas of the brain store different types of information, so I understand. The event or information is then stored as a potential / chemical energy within the cell to be retrieved when needed at a later time.

Since we are able to remember an earlier event, sometimes so vividly as to transport us back to that situation though for only a moment, these chemical reactions must be reversible. This reversal must be taking place when triggered by an external (or internal) stimulus. Thus some thought or an event occurring at the present moment acts as a stimulus to bring back memories of a past event or a piece of information stored in our memory.
Now, what happens to this stored energy when a person dies?

I believe, this stored energy tends to dissipate over a period of time either because of non-use or, perhaps, because of over-use with the result that as a person ages memory tends to fail and the person is unable to recollect past events as effectively as at a younger age. May be this is what causes ‘Senile dementia’ during old age. When a person dies of old age, by the time of death almost the entire stored energy must have got dissipated and whatever is left must be in the form of fragmented pieces of information.

On the other hand, when a person dies young while still healthy; may be in an accident or due to some other cause; the stored mental energy gets released in one mass. This mass of energy floats around dissipating over a period of time into the surrounding atmosphere. We may speculate on whether this mass of energy just hangs around at the point where it is released, or it takes flight and moves along a straight path or along a curved path, moves up or down, fast or slow and whether its movement is influenced by the air flow or by some other force like the surrounding magnetic field.

Now, for argument’s sake, if we assume that this mass of energy is moving along and encounters an absorptive medium on the way, it is just possible that this whole mass of energy or a substantial part of it is absorbed by that medium. If we assume, that the mind of a new-born child is such an absorptive medium, it is just possible that this whole mass of energy consisting of memories of past events and/or information stored over a period of time might get absorbed by it.

Could this be the basis of the various stories of re-birth that used to surface now and then from various parts of the world! In most such stories the person who is supposed to be reborn is seen to have died suddenly and at a young age.
