Recently on the 'Message Board' of MSN India someone had expressed an apprehension about the chances of Hinduism surviving into the 22nd century. What follows is the response that I posted to that discussion.
Hinduism, a religion (if at all it could be called a religion!) that has survived and spread over the last several millennia to different countries, I believe, is more likely to survive and grow in the coming decades.
The main threat to its survival comes from its, so called, saviours who are trying to turn it into a militant religion with a code of conduct and strict prescriptions of Do's and DON'Ts. Another threat is the bane of Caste distinctions that has crept into it and is being exploited by certain powers for their selfish gains.
Hinduism, I believe, never prescribed or proscribed anything; it only told its followers that each of their actions will have a reaction and when they do anything they should be prepared to face the consequences. It does not, I believe, demarcate strictly, what is Right and what is Wrong. The same action could be right under one situation and at one time; but, could turn out to be wrong as the situation and time changes. That is, possibly, the reason why it states emphatically that one has only to perform his duties sincerely and not to look forward to or expect any particular result.
Hinduism is basically an attitude, a way of looking upon life or even a way of life. One could be Hindu without actually following any of the rituals, paying obeisance to any particular God or even declaring oneself to be a Hindu. That is why it is more likely to survive and grow.
